Avignon
After our supermarket shop yesterday (so cheap compared to home) fruit and cereal for breakfast and coffee of course!
Leaving our apartment, we have 2 gates and a lift to navigate!
We have a great location inside the town ramparts and close to Place du Palais des Papes (Palace of Popes). Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was a seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. The palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We then jumped on a city bus tour (50min) which gave us a great insight into the town, it’s buildings and history.
We crossed the Rhone River and passed Fort Chartreuse. The Charterhouse monastery was founded in the 14th century.
View of Avignon from the opposite side of the Rhone River, with views of Pont Saint Benezet and Palais du Papes
After lunch we walked to Pont Saint-Benezet, also known as Pont d’Avignon. The bridge was built between 1177-1185. The original bridge was destroyed during fighting in 1226 and although it was repaired, floods destroyed all but 4 of the original arches years later.
Got an audio tour of the bridge for €4 each as we are senior citizens! 🤣
View from the drawbridge to the Rhone
The Romans built the walls (ramparts) in the 1st century around what we now call Avignon. There are 7 gates (main entrances ) to the town, each entrance with its own name.
Hope you were singing as you crossed those bridges.
ReplyDeleteFunny you say that, we did have music playing on our audio when we did Pont Saint Benezet!! 🤣
