Avignon - Arles

Caught the train to Arles - 20 minutes. Followed the crowd from the station  and ended up at these impressive stone pillars.

Arles became renowned as a cultural and religious centre during the late Roman Empire.

The amphitheatre, built in 90 AD held up to 20000 spectators for chariot races and bloody hand-to-hand battles. Today it is used for bull fights, plays and concerts.

Van Gogh Space - the entrance was once Hotel Dieu which was constructed in 1573.

More pics of Arles before heading back to the train station and return to Avignon.

Early start tomorrow morning for 10.04am train to Paris.
