Zagreb - Ljubljana

Breakfast at B&B and said farewell to Nevis our host, she was gorgeous and very hospitable!

Out for coffee with the locals off the ‘beaten track’, don’t have to go far and a totally different atmosphere, plus price! For an Americano and coffee with milk …. €3.30! We paid €8.20 the day before at a specialty coffee shop for 2 flat whites! Photo below.

Then walked to the Home of Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU). Before WW11 it was a mosque with minarets but was converted to HDLU in 1949. We looked at 2 exhibitions inside, although I’m sure others with more artistic flair and knowledge could have spent hours there! Plus we had to be at the train station in 90 minutes.

Then made our way to the station along beautiful park-like and tree-lined settings! The local Zagreb planners really did their jobs well hundreds of years ago putting a lot of thought into the design of the city with green spaces connected to the train station, hotels and the city centre!
There are 3 major squares or trg (in Croatian) linking the station to the city centre.

                             Trg Nicole Zrinskog

Trg Krakja Tomislava with the Puppet Theatre in the background

The statue is of King Tomislav who was crowned King in 925 and is recognised as the founder of the Croatian state.

                            Trg Bana J Jelačiča

Ban Jelačić

Count Josip Jelačić was the Ban of Croatia from March 1848 to April 1859. He was a Croatian Lieutenant Field Marshall in the Imperial Austrian Army and politician.
‘Ban’ was the title of local rulers.

Loved our 2 days in Zagreb, definitely over delivered and would definitely return! Under a million people, easy to navigate with great food selection, reasonably priced and not hordes of tourists like other places in Croatia. And not to mention the town planners … an outstanding job!

1pm train back to Ljubljana and back to apartment … feels like we are home! ☺️

A very high Sava River on our train trip back to Ljubljana - still recovering from the recent floods.
