What to do on a wet Ljubljana Day?

Woke to rain and 19 degrees, would have been celebrating but for a severe weather warning and flooding in Urh’s home town of Celje, about 90km away.

So what to do … IKEA is the answer! Our first experience of the Swedish phenomena. First time in 3 weeks we have worn jeans!

The building is termed as ‘carbon near- neutral’. Solar panels on the roof and geothermal provide all the energy required to operate the building. Rain water is collected and there is also a green area on the roof with wild flowers that mitigate the high temperatures and enable the building to cool down quicker.

The product range is huge and amazing! Once you have done with shopping … the next stop is food! A range of hot meals and very reasonably priced. I went for the famous meatballs, mashed potato and peas. Anne had the fish and chips. Then cinnamon scrolls washed down with complimentary coffee.

                                     Dining area

Then to the warehouse to pick up items that weren’t available in the showrooms. All items have a code, simply find the code and pick up the item.

Still had not quite finished the IKEA experience … time for one more food item … the IKEA hotdog at €.89c!

Mustard or tomato sauce? Or both?

Walked out very content and not even thinking about dinner tonight!

Couple of points of interest regarding IKEA

1. They are a ‘equal opportunity employer’- shock horror! They employ a range of people from various ‘walks of life’, including foreign nationals and provide language courses and supports to enable staff to fully participate in society.

2. All waste food is turned into bio-diesel which powers city buses. City buses which are not powered by bio-diesel are electric.

Slovenia 🇸🇮 has a population of 2 million.
