Štanjel-Osek-Vipava
Drove to Štanjel, near the Italian border and north of Trieste. A gorgeous township dating back to the Iron Age.
This signs depicts the Communist Star, synonymous with the Partisans in WW11 and the fight to liberate the country from the Germans and Italians.
Then on to Osek for wine tasting at Lepa Vida. A great back story to Lepa Vida. It was one of the first independent winery’s in Yugoslavia. Prior to the change of regulations, anyone growing grapes was only allowed a certain quota for themselves, the remainder went to the state. Women left the area during the building of the Suez Canal as domestic servants. Lepa Vida translates to ‘beautiful’ and ‘better life’ and the role that women played during these times.
A great selection of organic wines (and yummy local snacks), including the increasingly popular orange wine. Our host Irina was fantastic with great commentaries for each wine. She was very convincing as we left with 6 bottles!!
Then as if we needed more food and wine, it was off to Vipava for a delicious Slovenian late lunch!
Another great day with heaps of history, awesome buildings and architecture, excellent organic wines and yummy Slovenian food to top the day off!
And hvala to our tour guides Sam and Urh for their driving, commentary and selection of venues, another great day in Slovenia!! 👏
Check out that food!!
