Slovenia-Italy Road Trip (Day 2)
Left Kobarid (Sunday) and drove to Bovec for coffee.
View from apartment window in Kobarid.
Then on to Soca River. Just paddled our feet here, feeling very cold though! The water is a beautiful blueish colour due to the mineral deposits in the river. The water is sparkling clear also!.
We drove on to the township of Tomlin for a swim. Music festivals are also held here in summer.
It was 34 degrees and we were struggling in the heat … I estimate the water was around 14-15 degrees but I’m being very generous, it was bl…y cold! However, we persevered and even got our heads under briefly. Certainly helped regulate the body temperature back to normal for a while!
Then on to the Slovenian/Italian border in Števeran (Slovenian) or San Floriano del Callio in Italian. This region bordering both countries is bilingual, including signage. After WW11 new borders were introduced and lands that were once considered Slovenian became Italian as part of post war negotiations. This was not readily accepted by Slovenes but they continued to fight for the preservation of their language in the disputed areas.
We could take a lesson from this approach to bilingualism and embrace NZ’s indigenous language and learn from it, as I have learned during my time in Slovenia. This is happening across the world and no one is being damaged or disadvantaged!
This stone marks the border from 1947 - one side of the stone marks Italy 🇮🇹 and the other Slovenia 🇸🇮.
Something to eat and refreshments then back to Ljubljana for our last night. The boys we’re staying in Celje until Thursday so we bid them farewell after pizza and thanked for a great 4 weeks in Ljubljana and Slovenia. Their hospitality was great and they were also awesome organisers and tour guides … hvala Sam and Urh!! 🙏
And we finally got to Vigo, without queues for a yummy gelato before heading off to bed.
Farewell Ljubljana and Slovenia until next time!! 🥳
And finally, this photo farewelling the Ručigaj and Majcen family last Friday in Maribor.
