Škalce - Maribor

Yesterday (Friday) we drove to the Zlati Grič Winery on the southern tip of the Pohorje mountain range in the centre of the wine growing area of Škalce. They do a range of wines but are particularly known for their sparkling wines produced in the classical method and are matured for at least 3 years.

We had a guided tour, although Urh was our translator as the original person was unable to come.

The wine vats, 10 metres below ground can hold up to 1.3m litres! Side note: we were very relieved to be under ground as the temperature was a constant 12 degrees, yay!! 28 and humid above ground!

Very happy with our tastings and purchases!

Gorgeous views of the rolling hillside and vineyards

On to Maribor for a late lunch and catch up with Bojan who works in Maribor. Maribor is approximately 60km from the Austrian border.

Sculpture referred to as ‘Kojak’ signifies the years’ under German occupation and the liberation after WW11. Hitler visited Maribor during the war

Our last meal with the family. Ksenija gave as some lovely prints and a bottle of Slovenian Traminer to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in November - very sweet!

Then goodbyes … or as we said, “til we see you again.”😢
And we made our way back to the car for our drive back to Ljubljana.

Really enjoyed are brief visit to Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia. Very authentic with mainly locals and not as much tourism as Ljubljana. Worth at least a couple nights on our next visit.
