Marseille

First impressions can be deceiving … oh so true!! Walked out onto La Canebiere from the hotel this morning and what a difference to last night!! Marseille is a hive of humanity … a melting pot of cultures with a large North African influence. Love the place! It is edgy, hip, grubby and dodgy in places, but has a massive vibe!

Walked to the port and found the tourist train to the Marseille Cathedral.

Stunning views of the coast on the way.

And a walking and cycling path around the coastline.

The Cathedral was built in the 13th century. Nearly there!

                     Magnificent views of Marseille

And Le Stadē Velodrome towards the mountain, which will be hosting Rugby World Cup games.

After returning to the port, we walked to La Paniere, a ‘creative arty’ area of Marseille. Loved the street art!

Stopped for a bite to eat in La Paniere then made our way back to the hotel and came across street market, it was a ‘hive of activity’.

Made our way up to Cours Jardin, a very cool area with bars and cafes.

Lots of young men in the city … from my observations, not unusual to pass a cafe/bar and all the customers are male.

Back up to Cours Julien for pre dinner drinks and dinner.

And could our waitress handle glasses!!

Thought we were very clever doing our research for dinner … got to our selected restaurant at 7pm to be informed they didn’t open til 7.30pm!

Plan B and down to the port and a place we had sussed out in the morning. Anne had the set menu including salad starter,  steak, dessert and a carafe of red wine (€30), I went for the mussels and fries. Lovely meal and happy with our choices.

Then time for a few more pics of Marseille after sunset.

Marseille would be one of the most amazing places I have ever been to! A melting pot of cultures, always something happening and just fascinating ‘people watching’.

Families still out at night with young children and babies.

And a band doing their thing at 9pm on a Wednesday!

                            Bonsoir Marseille!
