Ljubljana - Mestre/Venice

Bused to Mestre via Trieste this morning. Took about 3.5 hours. Getting off the bus at Mestre felt like walking into a sauna, 35 degrees but humidity made it feel hotter! 🥵

Fortunately we knew where to head for the hotel having been here in 2019, plus Google maps of course and it was only 700m from the station.

After having a shower and resting up for an hour we headed back to the station and bought 2 return tickets to Venice for €5.80. Trains run every 10 minutes up until 11pm.

‘Followed our noses’and headed towards St Marks Piazza. Decided the sound of an Aperol Spritz and a Hugo was a plan to rest up and get some valuable liquids into the bodies!

Enjoyed the Hugo; sweet white wine, Prosecco, mint and lime, a winner I reckon!

Found our way to St Marks Piazza, the cathedral is absolutely stunning!

Then the mission of finding somewhere to go for dinner … no shortage of places to eat. Finally decided on a small place with tables outside. Ordered carbonara and lasagna, both were lovely.

Due to the heat, our phones (battery) are running down very quickly, therefore Google maps were not an option for directions back to the train station. For those of you who have been to Venice you will know it is like a rabbit warren!

Anne came across a young man and asked him for directions, he said he was going to the bus station nearby and he would walk with us! Turned out he was from Kharkiv in Ukraine. He came to Italy with his family 12 months ago and had been in Venice for the last 6 months working in a fast food cafe. He walked with us for 15 minutes and even offered to help us buy our tickets (we already had our return tickets). I thanked him very much and wished him a happy life and he then walked back to his bus station. What a great example of humanity!!

Got back to our hotel around 10pm and back in the shower! Train to Genoa tomorrow (Tuesday).
