Food Tour & Ligurian Coast

Last night (Wednesday) we met at 6pm for our food tour. We were joined by 3 adults and 5 children, including 5 year old triplet boys! Our first thought was the parents were pretty ‘game’ bringing 5 children on a food/walking tour from 6-9.30pm, however, turned out they all did really well and were still holding it together at the end.

Our guide Valeria, had a really interesting backstory. She was Chinese, born and bred in Genoa. Her grandparents immigrated to Genoa in the 1970s and opened the first Chinese restaurant in the city, quite an achievement as the Genovese are very protective and parochial about their food!

We had seafood cones, focaccia, pesto pasta, thin bases with cheeses, salami and anchovies, and finished off with gelato.

A wonderful evening with a great insight into Genovese culture, history and foods, grazie Valeria! And lovely meeting our Polish family, a very international evening!

And for you history buffs … the Genovese Republic imprisoned Marco Polo in this palace for 7 months. During this time, the book of his travels in China was written. As he was blind at the time, he didn’t physically write the book ... but you probably knew that!

Today (Thursday) we trained to Santa Margherita, on the Ligurian Coast, about 30 minutes from Brignole Station.

Valeria had recommended Nervi for swimming, so back on the train and 15 minutes back towards Genoa.

After all the walking and swimming … (haven’t mentioned the heat 🥵🥵) time for a beer, with a reasonable view!

No sandy beaches here and beach shoes are a must!

Have really enjoyed Genoa, especially the history and culture, and found the historic centre fascinating. Loved the narrow laneways and connecting bridges between buildings to connect families. The narrow laneways were a strategic means for defending against invaders.

Off to Nice (France 🇫🇷) tomorrow (Friday) on 10.05am bus.
